Sheffield Wednesday are gearing up to play Manchester City at the beginning of March, with the club offering the chance for 22 young fans to mascot the game, leading the players out.

The Owls haven’t had the greatest start to 2020, with turmoil taking centre-stage both on and off the pitch in terms of the playing staff and the behind-the-scenes issues surrounding the owner.

With only one league win since the turn of the New Year, Wednesday’s only saving grace at the moment is their run in the FA Cup that has seen them see off Brighton and Hove Albion and QPR to set up a glamour tie with Premier League champions Manchester City in the fifth round.

Wednesday haven’t been marvellous in the league, slumping to 12th in the Championship and nine points off the top six. The pressure is mounting on Monk to turn around their current rut, after results such as losing 5-0 and 3-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers and Reading respectively, as well as a drab 1-0 defeat away to Luton Town.

The visit of Pep Guardiola’s men to Hillsborough will provide the fans with a welcome break from the tense atmosphere that league games are currently bringing.

The club’s official website tweeted out to fans to promote an opportunity for young fans to mascot the club in their glamour cup tie:

It’s safe to say that even though it could be a once in a lifetime opportunity, the fans reacted to the post with a lot of sarcasm after their latest loss at the weekend...
