Wayne Rooney feels he will add more quality and experience to the Derby County team, as he prepares to make his debut for the Rams.

The 34-year-old joined Derby as a player-coach back in August and after months of excitement and anticipation, England and Manchester United's record goalscorer will finally be able to make his debut for the team against Barnsley on January 2.

Derby fans will hope that Rooney's introduction to the team as a player will give the rest of the squad a huge boost going into the second half of the Championship season, following their poor start to their campaign under Phillip Cocu.

Speaking to Sky Sports EFL Podcast, Rooney has given his thoughts on how he can help improve the team.

He also admitted he does not know what position he will be playing in for Derby, although he feels he's capable of adding quality to the team no matter what position he is playing in.

He said"Obviously I feel I can add quality to the team, obviously experience to the team, we've got a lot of young players. There's plenty I can offer the team to help us do better than what we're doing.

He added: "I'm a player who has played many different positions throughout my career, I feel ability wise I can do that.

"It depends on how the manager wants us to play as a team and the opposition. I'm sure I'll play in different positions again, the same as which I have in every team I've been at really.

"I'm ready to play, whether it's striker, number ten, midfield, I'm ready to play."

The Verdict

Derby have really struggled so far this season, so Rooney's introduction to the team as a player cannot come soon enough.

He may be coming towards the end of his career, but he's still more than capable of making an impact in the Championship and his introduction to the team should give the rest of the players a huge boost going into the second half of the season.

He's a quality player and his experience will be able to help some of the younger players at the club too. After spending weeks training and watching from the sidelines, he'll be determined to make an impact when he finally gets his chance to play.
