Derby County Football Club was formed 136 years ago today - a special day that Wayne Rooney has recognised on his personal Instagram page.

Rooney has been a key player since joining Derby in January, and has certainly lived up to expectations after what was perceived as a shock transfer switch by many.

The former Manchester United man instantly brought leadership and quality to the middle of the park, and the Rams climbed to within only five points of the play-offs before the season was suspended.

Have these 15 current Derby County players been capped at senior international level? – Yes or no?

Rooney has scored four goals in 15 games for the Rams since arriving at Pride Park, and Derby fans will be excited to see him in action next season, or whenever the remaining nine games of the current season are played.

Celebrating Derby's historic day, Rooney took to Instagram to post a selection of pictures of his time at Derby since arriving in the East Midlands.

England's all-time leading goalscorer also thanked Derby fans for their support this season, as well as saying how "delighted" he is to be a part of the club.

The Verdict

Eyebrows were raised when Rooney first joined Derby and was announced as a new signing, but he really has been a class act since joining.

It's probably unfair to pin Derby's results all on him, but he has proved to be a massive influence as Phillip Cocu's side soared up the table to make a top six finish seem more likely than before.

It will interesting to see how he performs with a full pre-season under his belt.
