Wayne Rooney sends message to Derby County supporters ahead of Blackpool trip

Published

on

Derby County boss Wayne Rooney has praised the ‘special’ fans for the way they’ve stuck by the team as almost 4,000 prepare to make the trip to Blackpool this weekend.

The Rams will be playing in League One next season despite a spirited effort to stay in the Championship after the club were hit with a 21-point deduction.

Given the circumstances, the support have been proud of the way Rooney’s team have played, with some even meeting the players after the relegation to show appreciation.

And, it’s fair to say that feeling is reciprocated, as the boss explained to the club’s media how he is grateful for the way they’ve backed the team, ahead of the big following that is going on Saturday.

To get relegated and still have such large numbers travelling to Blackpool shows how big this club is. It’s a chance for us to show our appreciation for what they’ve given to us this year.

It’s a special club with special fans – and we can’t thank them enough.”

The verdict

There is a real bond between the fans, Rooney and the players this season as those on the terraces recognise this group, mainly made up of young players, have given their all for the badge each week.

Ultimately, that’s all you can ask for as a fan and the table shows that without the points deduction, which is nothing to do with the players or staff, they would’ve survived.

So, Saturday will be another occasion for the fans to cheer the team on and, as Rooney says, it’s something the players really do appreciate.
