Wayne Rooney has discussed a passionate rant he directed towards Derby County teammate Jack Marriott during the 2-1 win over Barnsley on Thursday evening.
The former Manchester United player was named as captain by Phillip Cocu and played a key role as the side picked up a crucial three points.
The Rams opened the scoring in the 45th minute, and Rooney was involved as Jack Marriott made the most of his starting place by firing his side in front from a teasing set-piece by the England legend.
Despite putting the hosts 1-0 up, Marriott had missed several clear chances with some bizarre finishing on occasions and Derbyshire Live revealed how Rooney told Sky Sports that he had a word with the striker about that.
“It is not that he missed, obviously players miss chance but he was casual and lazy with it. I said to him at half time and he said he thought he was off side, it is something he will learn from.
“Go through, put the ball in the back of the net, and if you are offside, so be it. If not, you score the goal.”
Rooney and his teammates will now prepare to face Crystal Palace in the FA Cup on Sunday, before returning to league action next weekend against Middlesbrough.

Those comments from Rooney are exactly what Marriott needs. For too long this season, a number of Rams’ more experienced players have been underperforming and Rooney will not allow that to happen.
Named official captain for the remainder of the season, Rooney will ensure that his teammates give their all for every game and at every moment, whilst Marriott, and all the players, are going to listen to everything the 34-year-old says.
He brings high standards to the club and that’s going to rub off on the squad in the coming months.
