Wayne Rooney has revealed that he expects Derby County's takeover to be announced by Wednesday.

Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan is keen on purchasing the Rams from Mel Morris, with the EFL approving the deal earlier this month.

Since then, it had appeared a matter of time before the deal was confirmed, particularly after Phillip Cocu was sacked during the November international break.

However, it still hasn't formally been confirmed, although Rooney told The Athletic's Ryan Conway that it's at a very advanced stage and a confirmation should arrive in the coming days.

"I'm echoing what I said on Friday, it's really close. I'm hoping in the next 24 - 48 hours there will be a completion."

Sheikh Khaled's first task when he is appointed will be to appoint a new permanent boss, with Rooney hoping to land the top job himself.

The Manchester United legend was in charge for the weekend draw against Wycombe, a result that leaves the East Midlands outfit bottom of the Championship and five points from safety at this early stage.

The verdict

This will be frustrating Derby fans because it's seemingly been very close for a while now.

On the whole though, this takeover will have gone through extremely quickly in comparison to other rumours, and it will signal a new era for the Rams.

Of course, everyone will be interested in seeing who Sheikh Khaled appoints as the new manager, and it is a huge decision for him because Derby need some stability on and off the pitch after a disastrous start.
