Wayne Rooney has reiterated his desire to carry on at Derby County - providing Chris Kirchner completes his takeover of the club.

Even though the Rams were relegated from the Championship yesterday, Rooney's stock has risen this season due to the way he has handled himself under very testing circumstances at Pride Park, along with the football the team have played.

Despite that, the Manchester United legend once again made it clear to Sky Sports, as quoted by the Daily Mail, that he is willing to stay with Derby in League One.

"The takeover has to happen and if it doesn't happen I fear for the club, I fear for where the club will end up. Obviously the club's future is in doubt, if that doesn't happen my future's in doubt.

"If it happens, I want to rebuild the club. You see what it means to the fans every week. This is a special club, we're all proud to be here and I want to be the one that brings those happy days back."

Kirchner was named as the preferred bidder earlier this month and has already been in touch with Rooney about his future.

The verdict

You have to say that Rooney's commitment to Derby County has been fantastic, as he has improved his reputation and could quite easily get another job in the Championship at least.

But, he has a connection with all connected to the Rams and he can clearly see a bright future for the club under Kirchner.

So, all the support will be desperate for this takeover to go through and then Rooney can really get to work on trying to win promotion from League One next season.
