Watford could be set to ditch promotion-winning manager Slavisa Jokanovic in favour of bringing in a coach from abroad, according to respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.

46-year-old Jokanovic joined the Hornets last October, and had an excellent first season in English football management - guiding the club to a second place finish in the Championship and back into the Premier League for the first time in eight years.

However, despite the Serbian's successful campaign, Watford are looking increasingly likely to opt against offering him a new deal this summer.

Jokanovic's current deal expires in July and according to Sky Sports' Guillem Balague, the Hertfordshire club are stalling on offering the former Chelsea midfielder an extension whilst they look into hiring a manager from mainland Europe.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United or Sunderland would be willing to offer Jokanovic a way back into management, should he be dismissed by Watford.

However, with Sunderland guaranteeing Premier League survival last week, it seems more likely that interim manager Dick Advocaat will be offered the role at the Stadium of Light on a permanent basis.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will almost certainly decide to look elsewhere following caretaker manager John Carver's abysmal tenure which saw the club pick up just two wins from 19 games. Jokanovic has been touted as a possible replacement for the fifty-year-old, whilst Derby County manager Steve McClaren could also be in the mix, with his future at the iPro in serious doubt.
