Watford player edging closer to European transfer

Watford winger Philip Zinckernagel is close to sealing a move to Greek giants Olympiacos, it has emerged.

As per Danish publication BT, the 27-year-old is on the way to Greece to complete a switch that will see him depart Vicarage Road.

BT do not mention a fee in their report, however, reports from Greece claim that Olympiacos could be paying as little as €2 million for the Dane, which would be a bargain.

Those reports from Greece, and the BT article, report that Zinckernagel will sign a three year deal with his new club.

Philip Zinckernagel joined Watford in January 2021 after an impressive spell in Norway with FK Bodø/Glimt.

During that 2020 campaign, the Danish attacker scored 19 goals for the club, whilst also registering a staggering 24 assists.

Goals, assists nor appearances were not as easy to come by at Vicarage Road, though, with the 27-year-old played in central midfield rather than on the right, scoring just once and assisting five times in 20 Championship appearances.

Can you remember how much Watford paid for these 22 summer signings?

CRAIG DAWSON

As a result, when the Hornets won promotion to the Premier League, Zinckernagel was loaned back to the Championship and Nottingham Forest.

Last season, he contributed towards their promotion to the Premier League greatly, scoring 7 goals and registering 10 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions.

The Verdict

This one doesn’t come a surprise after recent reports claimed the club were willing to sell this summer.

However, the fee being reported is way under what a player of Zinckernagel’s ability should be going for.

After putting up such fantastic numbers in Norway, and having got 17 direct goal contributions at Forest last season, two million Euros seems a huge undersell – particularly given he has four years remaining on his contract.

A fee in the region of £5 million, at least, should have been the Hornets’ aim.
