Watford make Emmanuel Dennis and Ismaila Sarr decision amid transfer speculation

Watford are set to have Emmanuel Dennis and Ismaila Sarr available for selection when the season gets underway.

If the Hornets are still yet to agree a deal to sell either player by the opening game of the campaign then Rob Edwards will have both available in his first team squad.

That is what sporting director Cristiano Giaretta has claimed during the team’s pre-season preparations in Austria.

It has been previously reported that Everton are interested in signing the Nigerian international. Meanwhile, Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Sarr.

But with the Sheffield United clash on August 1 fast approaching, no agreements have been made for either player.

That means they will both join up with the squad when they return from central Europe on Monday.

The duo were later coming back to training due to their participation in international duty, and visa issues saw the pair unable to go to Austria with the squad.

But the club’s sporting director is confident they will be available to play against United should they still be with the club come the start of the season.

“It’s highly likely that if they are here when the season starts, they will be available for first-team games if Rob chooses to select them,” said Giaretta, via the Watford Observer.

“They would like to leave and have been looking at potential moves, but they are not causing us any problems. They are not banging on our door to get away as soon as they can.

“They will stay at the club if the market doesn’t deliver something we think is acceptable, in the same way Sarr stayed with us the last time we were in the Championship.”

This is Watford’s first campaign back in the second division following their relegation last season.

Edwards has taken over the role of manager this summer, leaving his position at Forest Green Rovers in order to replace Roy Hodgson.

The Verdict

It is always a difficult situation when the season gets underway but certain transfer decisions haven’t been made.

But Watford will just have to live with it if neither player is sold by August 1, and committing them now to being available is the best course of action.

Being firm and letting Dennis and Sarr know the situation early sets a good framework for mutual understanding.

Similarly, it sets an example for the future when another player inevitably looks for a move away while the season has already started.
