Watford are reportedly closing in on the signing of Philip Zinckernagel, who will become a free agent heading into 2021.

Zinckernagel is on the books at Bodo/Glimt. However, he is set to become a free agent on Friday as his contract with the Norwegian outfit starts to run down.

As per Football Insider, Watford are at an advanced stage with the transfer and hope to bring the 26-year-old in on a free transfer.

The Danish forward is an impressive goal threat. In 28 appearances in 2020, he notched 19 goals and registered a further 18 assists, proving to be one of the Eliteserien’s most prolific players. Zinckernagel also scored three goals in three Europa League appearances.

Watford completed the signing of João Pedro

In terms of Watford, they are adapting to life under Xisco now after he replaced Vladimir Ivic as the club’s head-coach.

A 1-0 win over Norwich City last time out has left Watford in a good place, with the Hornets fifth in the table and now just two points adrift of the automatic promotion picture.

They take on Millwall this evening in the Championship’s 5:30 kick-off.

The Verdict

The step between Norway’s Premier division and the Championship will be a big one.

We’ve seen players like Zinckernagel come to England and fall flat on their face, despite boasting impressive goalscoring records.

However, 19 goals, 18 assists and three goals in the Europa League isn’t to be sniffed at. Particularly on a free transfer.

It’s got risk, but also a wonderful reward.

Good luck to Watford if they get things over the line.
