Despite being an experienced striker, Dwight Gayle has had a tough few years with Newcastle United.
After gaining promotion to the top flight with the Magpies in 2017, the striker went on to make 35 appearances in the top flight. However, scoring just six goals meant the player was loaned out to West Brom for the 2018/19 season.
Gayle excelled in the Championship with the Baggies finding his goalscoring form again with 24 league goals for the season.
However, despite 38 Premier League appearances over the following two seasons, the 32-year-old scored only five goals.
Furthermore, with reinforcements having come into the club as well as the appointment of Eddie Howe last season, only eight Premier League appearances have come his way in the past year.
Therefore, it comes as little surprise that he is now one of three senior players in the Toon training with the U23s this summer.
Gayle currently has two years remaining on his contract at Newcastle meaning any deal this summer looks likely to be a loan initially.
It’s yet to be seen where the player will opt for a move to and whether further competition for the striker will come.
However, with Howe already needing to reduce his Premier League squad for next year, it seems certain that Gayle will be a Championship player next season.
Quiz: 20 statements about former Watford players – Are they true or false?
A loan move to the Championship next season is definitely the best move for all parties in this case especially with Gayle now 32-years-old and no doubt eager to get as much football under his belt as he can.
Both Watford and Birmingham would be doing some great business if they were able to gain the striker’s services this summer as he is a player that is proven at this level and one of the best strikers in the league.
Watford will be looking to go for promotion back to the Premier League next season and Gayle has already proven he can provide in a team pushing at the top. During his season with Newcastle when they won the league, he scored 23 goals and was the league’s top scorer and was able to add an extra goal during his spell with West Brom when they made the play-offs.
Furthermore, with it looking likely to be a loan move at this stage, this seems a very risk free move for either side and they will no doubt gain a lot on the pitch with an in form Dwight Gayle.
