Andre Gray has backed Watford to secure promotion, claiming they're 'the best team in the league'.

Expectations are high at Vicarage Road this term after suffering relegation from the Premier League last term with supporters hoping for an immediate return to the big time.

The Hornets spent five years in the top flight but now face a whole new challenge as they mount a comeback.

Life in the Championship has got off to an excellent start with Vladimir Ivic's side firmly in contention for automatic promotion - a position that, according to Gray, the club should be able to keep hold of.

As quoted by Herts Live, Gray said: "Being genuinely honest, we’ve got the best team in this league, that’s a fact.

"That’s not just saying it in terms of quality and the players we’ve had in the Premier League.

Did these 17 Watford players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

"We have proven players in the Championship who have been promoted before, so we need those kinds of people around the squad.

"It’s not easy and a lot of the young boys are starting to get it now that we’re going to have games where it’s horrible and it’s ugly but it’s a winning mentality that we need.

"So people like Troy [Deeney] is what we need in the club if we want to get promoted."

The Verdict

It's not often you hear players speaking with the sort of confidence that Andre Gray holds.

That said, I think that he does have a point.

Watford have the personnel to challenge for promotion this term with anything less likely to be seen as a big failure - that's why it's crucial that players like Gray can back up their claims with performances on the pitch.
