For a club of it's infrastructure and history, it still comes as a shock to many as to why Pompey find themselves in the basement league.

Hitting attendances of nearly 17,000 week in week out, the South Coast club look a team certainly on the ascent, especially with Paul Cook at the helm, certified after winning 3 times, drawing twice, and losing just once.

With the high profile signings of Carl Baker and Milan Lalkovic, from MK Dons and Walsall respectively, it proves how much Portsmouth want to push up from League Two, a division in which they certainly shouldn't be in when looking back a decade or so ago.

Glen Johnson vs Hull

These times may feel like a lifetime ago for the Fratton Park faithful, as Glen Johnson struck a thunderous strike in the Blues' Premier League fixture against Hull City in the 2008/09 campaign.

The season eventually culminated in a content 14th placed finish, despite the sackings of Harry Redknapp and Tony Adams.

However all eyes were on Europe, as Pompey featured in the UEFA Cup that term, however almost a decade later, find themselves in a steady 4th place position in League Two.

The 2005/06 campaign was a truly eventful one for the Fratton Park faithful.

Labelled as 'The Great Escape" season, Harry Redknapp managed to steer the Blues away from relegation, despite being the third man to take the reins of Pompey that season.

In this fixture against Manchester City, Mendes unleashed a magnificent strike, that sent the Blues well away from any threat of relegation.

The Portuguese midfielder endured an impressive time on the South Coast, making 58 appearances for Pompey in his two heat tenure at the club.

 

Matt Taylor vs Sunderland

Again, during the 2005–06 season, Matt Taylor scored perhaps the best goal the Premier League has ever seen, from all of 45 yards at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

Spotting the goalkeeper Kelvin Davis off his line, Taylor hit a dipping left-footed half-volley over Davis' head and into the back of the net, which sent Pompey fans everywhere into delirium, having been trailing 1–0 in a crucial "six pointer".

Taylor inspired a second half comeback with two goals and two assists in a 4–1 victory.

However, now the talented midfielder finds himself playing much lower down in the leagues than he should, just like Portsmouth. He now plies his trade at League One outfit Northampton Town, despite making 178 appearances for the Blues.
