Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly weighing up signing free agent defender Danny Simpson, which has drawn an interesting reaction from fans of the Yorkshire club.

According to the Sheffield Star, Simpson played for the Owls U23s in their 3-1 defeat to Coventry City yesterday and manager Darren Moore was present to run the rule over him.

The 34-year-old has Premier League pedigree, having come through the Manchester United academy and won the title with Leicester City, but has been without a club since leaving Huddersfield Town at the end of last term.

He proved a useful stopgap for the Terriers in 2019/20, joining during a rocky patch and helping Danny Cowley steer them clear of relegation.

Moore will be hoping that Simpson, who is available to join as soon as the Owls are convinced it's the right move, can have a similar impact at Hillsborough.

Wednesday are one place above the bottom of the Championship table and seven points adrift of safety with 11 games left to play.

Avoiding relegation looks likely to be a very tough ask for the Owls and Moore, who only took charge earlier this month, but the addition of Simpson could be just the boost the squad needs.

It seems to have proved divisive amongst the supporters, with many taking to Twitter to voice their thoughts.
