Neil Warnock is set to make his first Cardiff City signing of the summer, with Rochdale’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing expected to arrive at the Cardiff City Stadium on a free-transfer, reports HITC Sport.
Cardiff finished 12th in the Sky Bet Championship table this season, with Warnock transforming the Welsh side from relegation contenders into top-half competitors within eight months.
The 68-year old is now planning to build a squad that will challenge for promotion in the Championship next season, and is aiming to get his business done early in the summer.
Mendez-Laing will choose to join Cardiff ahead of a number of clubs, including Wigan Athletic, after an impressive season in League One, which has seen the winger score ten goals from his 49 appearances.
Rochdale almost benefitted from Mendez-Laing’s fine form, and just missed out on a place in the League One play-offs, finishing four-points behind Millwall in ninth.
The 25-year old has struggled to find a club in the Football League. Having initially come through Wolverhampton Wanderers’ academy, Mendez-Laing had loan spells away from Molineux before signing for Peterborough in 2012.
Mendez-Laing found first-team opportunities limited at London Road, and again found himself out on-loan around the Football League, eventually joining Rochdale in 2015.
