Lee Bowyer was once a controversial figure, often living on the edge

As a young man he was dogged by controversy, but his talking on the football field always saw him through. He started as a young apprentice at Charlton, but made his name in the slick, often sensational Leeds United team under David O'Leary.

He later went on to represent West Ham and Birmingham, but the two clubs he would forever be linked with would be the Addicks and Leeds.

He was a two-time Player of the Year at Elland Road, scoring crucial goals as they surged to the Champions League semi-finals. Strikes against AC Milan and Barcelona are still talked about at Elland Road to this day.

In 2017 he'd been doing a bit of coaching, as well as managing a fishing lake in France, but he was brought back into the game by then Charlton boss Karl Robinson.

Arriving as assistant manager, the news was as warmly received by Leeds United fans as it was those wearing the red of Charlton.

Perhaps Addicks fans should have been happier. After Robinson left with Charlton outside the top six, Bowyer took over and hasn't looked back.

Despite working under tough circumstances, a disinterested owner and ever decreasing squad of players, he's put them firmly in the promotion picture.

With a benevolent owner, or even just a replacement for Karlan Grant, they might well be in the top two right now. The former midfielder and all-round hard man has turned himself into a thinker, a good tactician and adept at dealing with the press too.

He's reserved, never outspoken and his demeanour belies his all-action persona as a player. He's certainly a manager who could have a big future, whether at the Valley or indeed at Elland Road.

Here's how both Leeds and Charlton fans reacted to his appointment.
