Walsall have a striker in their sights this summer, with Alan Nixon reporting via his Patreon that they are planning a bid for Mansfield's Danny Johnson.

The club are currently in League Two and are preparing for a campaign in the fourth tier and will need some more goals in their ranks if they want to try and push up the division.

Now, they are preparing a raid on their divisional rivals Mansfield for Johnson. The 29-year-old might be available too, with the player managing a total of just nine starts for Town during the last campaign. It resulted in just four goals and one assist throughout the campaign for his side.

Prior to that though, the forward had been a real forward asset in League Two. When he played for Leyton Orient, he managed a huge haul of 17 goals and one assist in 42 games during the 2020/21 season. It led to the side ending in the top half of the fourth tier before the striker sealed his switch to Mansfield.

He's certainly able to bag the goals readily in that division, having managed a double digit haul for Orient and then bagged 13, 18 and 13 for Gateshead back in the National League.

Having struggled to get onto the field too often for Mansfield last time out though, he will likely be desperate to get back onto the field regularly and to get firing again. If Walsall can offer him much more action, then he could reward them with the goals that they need in League Two.

The Verdict

Mansfield haven't played Danny Johnson perhaps as much as they should have last season when you consider his previous goal hauls in the division.

He managed a total of 11.2 lots of 90 minutes over the course of the entire campaign - and that ultimately led to his return of four goals and an assist. When you look at the average then, it comes out as 0.45 goals or assists per 90 - which is only slightly lower than the total that he managed with Leyton Orient.

Give him the starts and the minutes then and he could get back onto the scoresheet frequently then. With Walsall hunting for a new striker option, he could be just what they need if they plan to get him on the field often enough again.

Mansfield might sell and Walsall could get themselves a good player in Johnson - so a deal between the two clubs could be win-win.
