Speaking to the club’s official site, Walsall midfielder Anthony Forde insists the Saddlers are looking forward to the Sky Bet League One play-offs, despite missing out on automatic promotion by just a point.
Walsall were 5-0 winners at Port Vale on Sunday afternoon and missed out on promotion due to Burton Albion’s scoreless draw at Doncaster, and Forde says they will now have to take that form into the play-offs against Barnsley.
Forde said: “We were very good against Port Vale, brilliant even. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough to make the top two but it’s the play-offs now and we’re looking forward to that.”
“We did everything we could do. To beat Port Vale 5-0, we can only be proud and we now have to take that performance into the Barnsley game.”
“It’s going to be a good game. They are a good side but we are a good side – and we will be in with a great chance if we continue to play like that.”
Walsall have now won three on the bounce and the Irishman believes they deserve credit for how they’ve responded to going down 4-0 at Bradford last month.
“We have responded really well. We knew going into the Shrewsbury game we needed a big performance.”
“We did it and that set us up for Fleetwood and Port Vale. Every player, every fan, everyone involved should be proud of those performances and how we have finished the season.”
The first leg of Walsall’s play-off semi-final against Barnsley takes place at Oakwell on Saturday evening with kick-off at 5:30pm.
It’ll certainly be a close game with both sides in excellent form, as both teams recorded comfortable victories on the final day of the league season last weekend.
