It has been officially confirmed that Jon Whitney will take control of Walsall’s first team on an interim basis.
Although Walsall’s season seemed to be stalling as they had failed to win in six matches, it still came as a shock to see Sean O’Driscoll leave the club after only 16 matches in charge.
With Walsall sitting in fourth and only five points off the automatic promotion places, Jeff Bonser made the brave decisive action to sack O’Driscoll, in the hope that it can shock the side into picking up their early season form and help the Saddlers make up the ground on Wigan.
Although Jon Whitney is primarily a physiotherapist, Whitney has developed experience over the past five years with him unusually having two separate duties as the physiotherapist as well as the assistant manager.
Whitney has previous experience as he took charge of the side with the aid of goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler and veteran manager John Ward.
It was a brave decision by Bonser to promote from within rather than find someone better qualified however Bonser may feel that with Whitney being well known to the club, he can provide the continuity and avoid the disruption of a new manager whilst still providing the necessary change needed to halt Walsall’s disappointing run of form.
