Walsall boss Dean Smith was today rewarded for the Saddlers’ outstanding start to the League One season by being named League One’s manager of the month.
The 44-year-old has led Walsall to four wins and a draw from their opening five games, which has seen the Saddlers rise to the top of League One.
Smith’s man management skills have also seen him begin to get the best out of the enigmatic Romain Sawyers, while continuing to benefit from the consistent form shown by key players such as Tom Bradshaw, Sam Mantom, Adam Chambers and Milan Lalkovic.
The Saddlers have hit the ground running since the beginning of the season, with Smith’s brand of attacking football paying dividends, with impressive away wins at Southend, Rochdale and Blackpool, along with a tough home victory against Coventry.
Smith had this to say after receiving the award, saying to the official Football League site: “When you’re sat at the top of the league you’re always going to get a bit of recognition. It’s very pleasing to win but it’s not just an award for me, it’s for the staff and the team because without them you don’t get nominated.”
Walsall will look to continue their unbeaten start to the season when they host Bury at the Banks’s stadium on Saturday.
