Leeds United fans have been calling for talismanic midfielder Kalvin Phillips to be given a chance for England, a debate that has been picked up by Sky Sports pundit Danny Higginbotham and former Whites defender Danny Mills.
Gareth Southgate’s side beat Kosovo 4-0 yesterday to cap off an impressive qualifying campaign, which saw them win Group A at a canter and seal their place at Euro 2020.
The England boss now has just two games left before he has to pick his squad for the tournament and then a further two more friendlies before it begins.
Does Phillips deserve a chance for England?
He will have a number of selection dilemmas ahead of that, none more so than who to play at the base of his midfield.
Writing in The Sun, Higginbotham suggested that Phillips deserves an opportunity to prove himself ahead of the tournament.
He said: “The Three Lions don’t play again until March — if Phillips continues in this current vein of form then I see no reason why he shouldn’t be involved.
“I’m not saying he should be brought in as first choice. But in a position which is yet to be locked down, Phillips is well worth having a look at.”
Speaking on talkSPORT, Mills disagreed with Higginbotham and suggested that picking Phillips would be a mistake.
He said: “I’d love it. I think he’s a fabulous player but the step up to the Premier League is huge, the step up to international football is absolutely massive.
“Without a shadow of a doubt (he’ll be on Southgate’s radar) but I think sometimes people underestimate the step up to go from even the Premier League to stepping into those international shoes is absolutely huge.”
The defensive midfielder has been fantastic in the Championship for Leeds–starting every game so far and helping his side climb to third, concede the fewest goals and keep the most clean sheets in the division.
Unsurprisingly, many Leeds fans hold similar opinions to Higginbotham and have called to the 23-year-old to be given a chance.

@henrywinter interesting that pundits saying no decent DM to fill that role for England. When we have got Kalvin Phillips who would excel. If he played for top four he would be there…. should be on merit not club you play for #lufc #england

How has Kalvin Phillips not had an @England call up but you got Rice in there ?

Ming's and TAA horrible tonight. Rice absolutely none existent. Zero tempo looks like we can't be bothered. Qualification already done fair enough. But Ben White and kalvin Phillips walk into this side. #koseng #LUFC #Euro2020Qualifiers

If Kalvin Phillips was a Premier League player he'd be so much better than Rice for England

How does rice get in the England squad never mind a start and Phillips can't Phillips might not have played premier League football yet but he could no probs
