Elliott has spoken about how his move to City was brokered muted within minutes of the final whistle on the last day of the season. The thirty-five year old joined on loan from Birmingham City last season and impressed manager Steve Cotterill for him to offer a deal shortly after the fixture against Crawley on the 3rd of May.

The midfielder has expressed a desire to stay at Ashton Gate, a move which seemed ever more likely when Birmingham didn’t offer the player an extension to his ending contract. Elliott has signed a twelve month deal with the Bristol club, becoming the second summer signing for the Sky Bet League 1 club after Peterborough’s Mark Little.

Speaking of the deal Elliott said: “I remember the gaffer coming up to me five minutes after the end of the Crawley game and saying ‘do you fancy it next season?’.

“I said ‘yes’ immediately, so he told me to go and enjoy my holidays and we’ll work something out. It really was a no-brainer for me, which is probably testament to how well last season went. Everyone at the club treated me so well, the fans were terrific and it’s great to be back.”

In his loan spell he appeared nineteen times and scored three vital goals as the club pulled clear from the relegation zone finally finishing in the top-half of the table.

He added: “I seriously thought about going abroad to further my football career and was quite set on that for a bit. But because I enjoyed my time (at Bristol City) last season, my mind was made up as soon as the offer came my way. I’ve gone on record to say how grateful I am to Steve Cotterill for giving me my chance at Burnley. He showed faith in me then and he’s done it again here at Bristol City.
