Burton Albion were relegated to League One on the last day of the season, following their 2-1 defeat at the hands of ten-man Preston North End.
After going behind early on, Hope Akpan got them back into the game with what was his second goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to save the club from relegation.
The 26-year-old midfielder signed a one year deal with the Brewers, after his release from Blackburn Rovers in July last year.
With Nigel Clough’s side demoted to League One, it is vital that Burton can get Akpan back to the Pirelli Stadium next season. While he hasn’t been prolific in front of goal this campaign, the Nigeria international’s two goals this season have come in the final two games.
While it may not have been enough to keep his side in the Championship, the commitment and fight shown by Akpan must be rewarded with a new contract.
Akpan started his career at Everton, after making his way through their youth set up. The midfielder never made a first team appearance for the Toffees, before joining Crawley Town.
After spells at Reading and Blackburn Rovers, the young midfielder found himself out of contract and looking for a club.
Much like then, the time on Akpan’s contract is up and Nigel Clough has some decisions to make.
Getting players interested in signing for a newly relegated side can often be difficult. When you possess a player like Hope Akpan, who has already had a year with the squad, it makes sense to re-sign the player.
Burton Albion had the lowest wage budget in the Championship this season, but the fact Akpan was already at the club meant that they can afford him for another season.
Burton Albion had the lowest wage budget in the Championship this season and managed to put together a side that was just two points off surviving in their second ever season of Championship football.
Akpan has everything that a League One side should be looking for in the middle of the park, and the Brewers should be taking the chance to resign Hope Akpan at the first opportunity they get.
