Vincent Kompany addresses key dilemma he faces at Burnley

Burnley and boss Vincent Kompany are preparing for life back in the Championship this season and whilst the club have signed plenty of names to get their squad ready, they’re still without a named captain.

Since arriving at Turf Moor from Belgium, former Man City man Kompany has got to work moulding the team into his image so that the Clarets can push on for a potential promotion.

However, what the manager is still to do is name the club’s captain for the forthcoming campaign – and speaking in a Q and A session at Burnley College (via LancsLive) he admitted he wants to ‘take time’ and pick out a ‘real leader’ before confirming who it is.

25 questions about Burnley’s most unforgettable moments in their history – Can you get 100% correct?

Burnley had a substandard season last time around in the Premier League and after a six-year stay in the top flight, they are now back to playing second tier football. With players having departed at the end of their deals and having left to continue playing at a higher level, the Clarets will have a new look team this campaign.

That means the club will also have a new captain, with their previous leader having been one of the names shown the door at Turf Moor. Now, the club’s supporters are eagerly awaiting the announcement of who that new captain may be – but according to Kompany, the manager is taking his time thinking about who should be given the role.

Speaking in the Q and A session at Burnley College (via LancsLive) the Burnley boss said: “I have been a captain myself and I nearly made a very big mistake when I was the first time a manager, I nearly gave the captaincy to a guy that I know I would have regretted if he had taken the captaincy, so I have decided to take my time and see how the lads react in bad times.

“We have to have a couple of bad moments before you know who the real leaders are and we will take our time. In the meantime, the armband is one thing you can give on the pitch but for it to mean something you have to take your time and pick out the real leader so it means the same to the group as to us.”

The Verdict

There are a few players that you would think could have the Burnley captaincy under Vincent Kompany next season.

The new boss could choose a player who has spent plenty of time with the club like Charlie Taylor or Jack Cork, who are likely to both play football for the Clarets this campaign on a regular basis and both have plenty of experience in the EFL in general to boot.

Or, instead, the former Man City man could decide to appoint one of his new signings as the captain to give his side a complete refresh. He’s signed players who could be considered as leaders on the field and it might be beneficial giving one of the new names the role.

Either way, the captain should be in place by the first game of the season, so Burnley fans may not have long to wait to find out who the club’s captain will be for the new campaign.
