West Bromwich Albion boss Slaven Bilic is keen to see the current Championship season finished, with his side on course to win promotion back to the Premier League.

There are just nine games of the season remaining, with West Brom sitting second in the Championship table, just a point adrift of league leaders, Leeds United.

More importantly, six points separates the Baggies and Fulham in third, which leaves matters firmly in Bilic’s hands in terms of the top-two.

Yet, the EFL postponement following the outbreak of coronavirus has put the Baggies’ promotion push on hold, with various calls around the country for the football season to be deemed null and void, as public health takes priority.

For the likes of West Brom and Leeds, they are rallying for the completion of 2019/20 before the new campaign can begin, with so much resting on the nine games left to be played.

And, Bilic has taken on that topic of discussion with Turkish newspaper, Fanatik: “I don’t know when football will restart. The professionals will decide that, but the important thing is the safety of the people.

“Actually, I don’t think about football at the moment. I hope football will resume soon both in England and Turkey. Because I think this season needs to be completed on the pitch.”

Amongst those to side with West Brom and Leeds has been Gary Neville, but other public figures like Piers Morgan are calling for the campaign to be forgotten about.

The Verdict

It is little surprise to hear that Bilic is wanting the season to finish, with his side, along with Leeds, looking on course to win promotion back to the Premier League.

These clubs have worked so hard to get themselves into this position with nine games to go, and to see that all pulled from underneath them would be gutting at this stage.

For the integrity of the game, surely they’ve got to finish the season.
