Leeds United director of football Victor Orta believes that Kalvin Phillips and Kemar Roofe will both stay at Elland Road for the upcoming season.

The duo have both been linked with moves away from the club this summer.

Roofe found the net 15 times for Leeds last season, in a campaign in which he was hampered by injury.

The forward's current contract at Elland Road is set to expire next summer and Burnley and Rangers have been linked with him this summer.

Phillips excelled under Marcelo Bielsa last season, making 46 appearances and earning himself a place in the EFL Team of the Season.

The 23-year-old's performances did not go unnoticed and he has reportedly caught the attention of a string of Premier League sides, including Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

Leeds are believed to have opened talks with Phillips about extending his contract with the club, which currently runs until 2021, but an agreement is yet to be found between the two parties.

Orta discussed the ongoing negotiations between Phillips and the club at a fan event on Leeds' pre-season tour of Australia.

Quoted by Leeds Live, he said: "It’s not a negotiation. He is a Leeds United player and will be a Leeds United player for the season 2019/20.

“Leeds United want Kalvin Phillips to stay next year 100%."

When pressed on the future of Roofe, he added: "The same. Personally, I believe he will stay."

The Verdict

These comments should be music to the ears of Leeds fans given how important the duo are to the Whites.

Leeds will need a reliable goalscorer if they're to achieve their target of promotion this season and Roofe has looked like exactly that over the previous two seasons – scoring 25 goals across two campaigns which were both impacted by injury.

No other player in the Leeds squad is capable of playing the defensive midfield role in Bielsa's preferred 4-1-4-1 formation to the level of Phillips and replacing him would be really difficult before the start of the new season.

With so much speculation flying around this summer about the future of both men, to hear Orta come out and say that he expects them both to stay is encouraging for the Whites and their promotion chances.
