Ipswich Town are in pole position to bring back veteran defender Gareth McAuley to Portman Road according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

The 38-year-old is a free agent following his release by West Bromwich Albion and it had been reported that Scottish Premier League side Rangers, now managed by Steven Gerrard, were closing in on his signature.

So would McAuley be a good signing for the Tractor Boys?

We discuss.....

Gary Hutchinson

I’m biased because as a Lincoln fan, I saw McAuley in his early years and have a soft spot for him.

He’s not getting any younger, though is he?

If they can cover his lack of pace, he’ll be a decent signing, but he has a shelf life.

My concern is, he might be past his sell by date now.

George Dagless

Very good signing this.

He may be getting on but he has plenty of experience and is a solid defender.

Ipswich need some older heads and McAuley should provide a good boost at the back as well as an aerial presence.

Jay Williams

McAuley is not quite the player he was five to ten years ago but he could still do a job in the Championship.

A return to Ipswich is a preferable option and he will reunite with former team-mate Jon Walters in an old boys' reunion.

The former Northern Ireland international offers a wise head at the back and some much-needed experience in their ranks.

He will also assume a sort of mentoring role, helping the likes of Janoi Donacien and Aristote Nsiala make the steps up to defending in the second tier.

Jay Taylor

Very good signing for Ipswich.

Having bought in several players from the lower leagues, adding a player of Gareth McAuley’s experience will be vital for a side who have not won a game this season as they look to get their season up and running.

The defender boats extensive Championship and Premier League experience and will be a fantastic addition to a young side who are lacking a little in that specific area.
