Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has commented that he would like to keep youngster James Wilson at Old Trafford until at least December in the face of significant Sky Bet Championship interest, reports the Guardian

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Derby County were both keen on signing the young striker on loan as they looked to bolster their promotion chasing sides.

However, any Championship club looking to secure the talents of the youngster will likely have to wait until at least December to make an approach for the 19-year-old, who has signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford.

The charismatic Manchester United manager stated: 'Maybe we have to wait until December to know how it is with our club – if we are succeeding in the Champions League, the Capital One Cup – because maybe he shall receive minutes off me because I have to rotate.'

Despite the fact that Wilson still seems some way away from first-team football at the Premier League giants, behind Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial in the pecking order, van Gaal is not keen to loan him out just yet in a bid to keep his options open, despite the intense interest from a number of Championship clubs.

But when the North East club decide the loan out the youngster, it seems likely that Paul Clement's Derby and Kenny Jackett's Wolves will be the two clubs chasing the youngster's signature.

Derby spent over £20 million this summer investing in their squad, but still feel slightly short of attacking options, while Wolves have only two fit strikers available for selection in the form of Adam Le Fondre and Benik Afobe.

Wilson would provide both Clement and Jackett with a significant alternative, and first team football at a second-tier club chasing promotion is exactly what Wilson needs to spur himself towards the United first team, and he is likely to be given that chance in December.

The England Under-21 international will now have to impress in the United development squad, but he could be playing in the Championship from December.
