Valerien Ismael expects Taylor Gardner-Hickman to see more game time as the second half of the season progresses, as per a report from the Express & Star.

The 20-year-old has been a reason for West Brom fans to be optimistic this season, in a campaign thus far that has been filled with mixed emotions.

In six Championship games for the Baggies, of which five have come from the very start, Gardner-Hickman has been deployed in a number of different roles, with the young academy graduate being tasked with playing in both wing-back roles and as a holding midfielder.

Speaking to the Express & Star about Gardner-Hickman’s progress at The Hawthorns and how 2022 might look for him, Ismael said: “If he continues to progress and to show his quality he will get his chance.

“He has proven already that he is more than a back-up player.

“Taylor has a lot of our principles. He is dynamic, he has the right mentality, he is fearless and he listens.

“I think those are his strengths and we have seen them in the games he has played – he always has an impact on the game.

“He is flexible for us, he can play two positions – at wing-back and in the six-position, he is a big assist for the club.

“It is very important to give him a long-term contract and for the club to keep our good young players rather than see them leave for other clubs.

“A very important part of our job is to create a pathway for the academy players.”

The verdict

It is clear to see that the young, versatile option is not just a player who the fans are warming to, he is someone who is continually impressing his manager.

It really is a glowing verdict from Ismael, with the Frenchman speaking about the importance of tying him down to a longer deal in the Midlands.

Gardner-Hickman is showing all the qualities needed to succeed in the Championship at an early age, which is an indication that he could go on to enjoy an extremely successful career.

He may have to continue being patient for regular contention, but it would be no surprise to see the 20-year-old as an integral part of the team as the season progresses.
