Wayne Rooney has spoke to Charlie Austin as he looks to convince the striker to join Derby County before Friday’s deadline.
The West Brom man is down the pecking order at The Hawthorns and the arrival of a new striker at Albion this week, which is expected, would seriously impact his game time.
Therefore, the Rams are keen to do a deal to bring the 31-year-old to Pride Park but it had been reported that Austin wasn’t keen on making the switch. And, further interest from Cardiff City won’t have helped Derby’s chances of landing the ex-Southampton man.
However, Football Insider have revealed that Rooney is doing all he can to try and get Austin to move across the Midlands as he has been in contact with the striker to speak to him.
The England legend has been an influential player for the Rams on the pitch but he joined the club as a player-coach and the update details how he is having a more prominent role off the pitch now as he looks to help Phillip Cocu.
Quiz: Can you name these 10 ex-Derby County midfielders?
Rooney has been a hugely influential figure in English football over the years and there’s no doubt that Austin will have loved to hear from someone who has achieved what the former Manchester United forward has in the game.
Whether it’s enough to convince Austin to Derby remains to be seen but it’s obvious that Rooney recognises just how important the Albion striker would be to the team.
Ultimately, Austin has a big decision to make before Friday and it will be interesting to see where he ends up.
