Alex Neil has opted to join Stoke City from Sunderland because he feels he wasn't properly backed in the transfer market.

The Scotsman was only named as the Black Cats boss earlier this year, succeeding Lee Johnson at the Stadium of Light, and he brought immediate success, as the Wearside outfit won promotion back to the Championship.

And, even though Sunderland have enjoyed a positive start to life back in the second tier, it's been reported that Neil will be leaving for the Potters.

Given their position, this decision has come as a shock to many fans, and Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has revealed that a lack of support in the transfer market was the factor behind the call.

"Told Alex Neil has said his goodbyes to the players, and the Sunderland manager was very emotional. He’s set to take over at Stoke as he felt Sunderland failed to back him in the transfer market."

Dan Ballard, Ellis Simms, Jack Clarke and Jewison Bennette are just some of the new faces to arrive this summer.

The verdict

There's no doubt that Sunderland needed a few more new signings to beef up the squad ahead of the deadline but this does seem like a pretty weak excuse from Neil.

Firstly, Stoke's situation means they aren't going to be able to splash the cash, whilst the Sunderland board can point to the fact they have a net spend this summer more than most in the league.

So, you can't imagine this reason will wash with all Sunderland fans, although the recruitment team do need to ensure the squad is improved by next week.
