Coventry City remain keen to tie midfielder Zain Westbrooke to a new long-term contract with the club, despite the fact the club are in no rush to secure their out of contract players to new deals, a report from Coventry Live has revealed.

Westbrooke has emerged as a key player for the Sky Blues this season, scoring four goals and providing two assists in 25 league appearances so far this season, to help Mark Robins' side to top spot in the current League One table, seven points clear of the play-off places.

Those performances had seen Westbrooke linked with a number of Championship sides during the January transfer window, with promotion-chasing trio Leeds, West Brom and Nottingham Forest among those said to be interested in a move for the 23-year-old, whose contract with Coventry is set to expire at the end of the season.

Ultimately however, Westbrooke would remain with Coventry beyond the end of the January transfer window, with Robins having stated at the time that he would like to secure the midfielder's future with the club for the long-term.

The latest reports have now suggested that that continues to be the case, despite the fact that chief executive Dave Boddy is said to have revealed that the club are not looking to secure those new contracts imminently.

It is thought that Coventry would have demanded a fee of around £2million for the midfielder back in January, had any offers for Westbrooke materialised.

Along with Westbrooke, first-team duo Amadou Bakayoko and Jordy Hiwula are both also out of contract at the end of this season.

The Verdict

Securing Westbrooke to a new contract would certainly be a sensible move for Coventry.

The midfielder has certainly been an impressive figure for Coventry this season, so you imagine they will want to get him that new contract to ensure they have such an important player available to them for years to come.

Indeed, even if they are unable to keep Westbrooke at the club, they will surely at least want to get him to sign a new deal before he does potentially leave the club, then they can at least receive a fee that they can spend on finding a replacement for the midfielder.
