Steve Bruce is still expected to be named as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager, although Lee Bullen could remain in charge for Saturday's game at West Brom.

The Owls have been on the lookout for a new boss since sacking Jos Luhukay just before Christmas and the former Aston Villa boss emerged as the frontrunner.

However, many expected a deal to be sorted for Bruce by now but that hasn't been the case.

Instead, former player Bullen has been in charge and he has done extremely well, guiding the side to back-to-back victories.

But, Sheffield Star reporter Dom Howson revealed today that Bruce is still expected to take over at Hillsborough, adding that his two trusted assistants, Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew, watched the side again against Boro.

Yet, his tweet also stated that there are issues to finalise with Bruce and that the experienced boss is not currently in the UK.

Therefore, Bullen could take charge as the Owls face an extremely tough trip to The Hawthorns to take on in-form Albion.

If that is the case, Bruce's first game as boss could be against former club Birmingham at home on New Years' Day.

The Verdict

It still seems a case of when not if regarding Bruce taking over at Wednesday and there's no real desperate need to rush things after their recent victories that have eased the pressure somewhat.

Given his experience and pedigree at this level it seems like a smart move from the Yorkshire club.

Now, it's about finalising a deal and backing Bruce during January - which is always a crucial month.
