Sheffield United are facing a nervous wait as they look to discover the extent of John Egan's injury ahead of Saturday's Yorkshire derby at Rotherham.

The centre-back, who was a big-money summer signing, suffered a calf injury on international duty as Ireland drew with Northern Ireland on Thursday.

That meant he missed the Nations League clash with Denmark last night and the Sheffield Star are reporting that Chris Wilder will leave it until Thursday before making a decision on the player.

"We'll know more shortly. It's too early at the moment to say anything really. We're still assessing him and we'll see," the manager revealed.

The report also states that the Blades are prepared to be patient with Egan as they gear up for a very busy period.

After the game against the Millers, Sheffield United have a midweek clash away to Brentford before a big game against Leeds United at Bramall Lane.

Therefore, Egan could be protected against Paul Warne's men, with Richard Stearman and Martin Cranie two potential options for Wilder if the 26-year-old isn't available.

The Verdict

It's always frustrating to lose a player to injury in the international break although it's clearly not too serious for Egan.

Nevertheless, he is a very important member of the Blades back three and it would be a blow if he is out of Saturday's game.

However, Wilder has a big squad and that would provide someone else with an opportunity to step up.
