Blackburn Rovers are closing in on the signing of Lewis Holtby after holding productive talks with the midfielder.

Reports emerged earlier in the week suggesting that the Championship outfit were keen on the player, who is a free agent after leaving Bundesliga II side Hamburg in the summer.

And, journalist Alan Nixon has given a further update on the situation, responding to a fan that asked if the deal was almost complete with; 'barring any unexpected snags'.

That suggests Tony Mowbray will be confident the deal can go through to bring Holtby back to England after he had spells with Tottenham and Fulham earlier in his career.

Whilst the previous campaign didn't go to plan for Hamburg, the three-times capped German international had a decent campaign from an individual perspective, weighing in with four goals.

As well as that, he missed the run-in, during which time HSV imploded, somehow falling outside the top three after failing to win six of their last seven games.

With the 29-year-old a free agent, there is no rush for Blackburn to complete a deal.

The verdict

This seems as though it could be a smart signing for Blackburn as there's no doubt that Holtby has quality on the ball and he would fit into the team quite nicely.

To pick up a player of his experience on a free would represent a smart bit of business and this update will excite fans as it seems a deal is close.

Now, it's about finalising the move and it could see Holtby involved with the squad in the coming games.
