Sunderland are hoping to secure a deal for a striker and will also be in the market for a centre-back as they look to strengthen their squad in the New Year.

Phil Parkinson has endured a very tough start in charge of the Black Cats and they are currently four points away from the play-off places heading into the busy festive period.

A run of one win in six league games has highlighted the major issues with the squad right now and the ex-Bolton chief will be hoping to be active once the window opens.

And, reporter Alan Nixon has revealed where the club are hoping to make additions, with new recruits at both ends of the pitch the aim.

"There’s a forward lined up. But wanted by others. Maybe a centre half too. A buy."

Finding a new number nine is understandably a priority for Parkinson as Sunderland haven't scored two or more in a league game since October 22, when they beat Tranmere 5-0 at the Stadium of Light.

The Wearside outfit are back in action against Bolton Wanderers on Boxing Day.

The verdict

Most Sunderland fans will be hoping for a very busy January as not only do they need new signings but they also need to clear some players out.

Results have been alarming in recent weeks and Parkinson will know that it can't go on but he will hope to get the window to make the changes he wants.

For those in the squad, they need to impress in the next few games as many will be playing for their futures.
