The Blackburn squad refused to agree to a pay deferral as the club look to manage costs amid the ongoing Coronavirus crisis.

With football stopped for the foreseeable future, clubs across the world are taking action as they look to cope with what could be a significant drop in revenue in the coming months.

In the Championship, the likes of Birmingham City and Leeds United have all agreed deferrals with their players, whilst in the Premier League, a #PlayersTogether initiative has been launched which will see those in the top-flight donate money to help the NHS.

However, The Athletic have claimed that the Lancashire outfit haven't been able to adopt any cost-cutting measures right now after the group didn't agree to defer any of their salary.

"Blackburn Rovers tried to impose a plan of their own but the squad refused to accept it, complaining they were given too little time to consider the details."

It remains to be seen whether this can be revisited as talks continue with clubs on how they can look to get through this situation.

The verdict

You'd have to say that this isn't a good look at all for the Blackburn players and you would hope that some sort of agreement can be reached in the coming weeks, particularly as a deferral means they won't be losing out in the long run.

There had been reports suggesting they were asked to make a decision over their March wages in just half a day, which obviously isn't much time, but it's surprising there have been no developments since.

It's clear that football clubs in the Championship and below will need help to survive this and hopefully the players will help if possible.
