Wigan Athletic's takeover is edging nearer but will not be ratified today by the EFL, as per a tweet from Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The Latics have been waiting for new owners for some time after they were controversially plunged into administration and relegated from the Championship thanks to a heavy points deduction.

They've been hoping to get in new owners ever since in these most testing financial times and it looks as though they're closing to getting a deal done, though things haven't been rubberstamped just yet.

Indeed, Nixon reveals the Spanish group are on the brink of getting it done, but the EFL will not be confirming things just yet:

The Verdict

Wigan fans have had to wait for quite a while so a few more days probably won't matter too much in terms of their patience.

However, they'll be eager to see it get done and hopefully then see the club on more certain terms after what has been a terrible period for them, through no real fault of their own.

On the pitch, they're currently bottom of the league as things stand and the hope will be the new owners boost morale and offer the club a chance of signing some much-needed reinforcements in January.
