Sheffield Wednesday are yet to make contact with Paul Cook over the vacant manager's role, according to The Athletic.

The Owls in searching for someone to step into the hot seat after deciding to sack Garry Monk late on Tuesday evening.

Monk has led the Yorkshire side during a particularly tricky period in which they were handed a 12-point deduction coming into this season as a punishment for breaching spending regulations.

But things have gone less-than smoothly so far this term with Wednesday still sitting in 23rd position as we near being one quarter of the way through the campaign.

Dejphon Chansiri clearly thought that a change was necessary and so the hunt for a new manager begins, with Cook thought to be 'the early favourite' for the job.

While the Owls' hierarchy are yet to make contact with the former Wigan Athletic manager over the post, it's reported that he would be interested in the role if if was offered to him.

However he isn't the only contender with Nigel Pearson, Tony Pulis and Danny Cowley all namechecked as candidates for the position.

Whether Wednesday will move to appoint Cook remains to be seen, but with a trip to face Preston North End in store in a week-and-a-half the focus is now on getting their preferred candidate in position sooner rather than later.

The Verdict

Paul Cook would be an ideal candidate for the role.

While also benefitting from being a free agent, the former Wigan Athletic boss has a wealth of experience in excelling in high-pressure situations - something that he's bound to find at Hillsborough.

The Owls need someone who will relish the challenge given his experience with the Latics it's hard to look past Cook as the best man to take Sheffield Wednesday forward and keep their heads above water.
