Sunderland are in pole position to seal a move for Everton forward Nathan Broadhead this summer, according to a report from the Sunderland Echo.

It is understood that due to the fact that the 24-year-old is not expected to sign a new contract at Goodison Park, it is likely that he will make a permanent departure between now and the end of the window if the Toffees reach an agreement with a potential suitor.

As per journalist Alan Nixon, Sunderland could face competition from Wigan Athletic for Broadhead's signature as Leam Richardson's side are also believed to be keen on a move.

Broadhead produced some encouraging performances during his loan spell at the Stadium of Light last season.

In the 22 league appearances that he made for the Black Cats, the forward managed to find the back of the net on 10 occasions.

Broadhead also scored for Sunderland in the League Cup and the EFL Trophy.

The Black Cats have bolstered their options up-front this summer by securing the services of Ellis Simms on a temporary basis from Everton.

Simms played a key role in Sunderland's 3-2 victory over Bristol City on Saturday as he netted a brace on his debut at Ashton Gate.

The Verdict

Although Sunderland are currently able to turn to Simms and Ross Stewart for inspiration, they will need some cover in this particular position and thus Broadhead certainly fits the bill.

Given that the Black Cats are believed to be the favourites to win the race for Broadhead's signature, it wouldn't be at all surprising if they opt to step up their transfer pursuit in the coming days.

Sunderland will need to submit a respectable offer for the forward due to the fact that his current deal at Everton is set to run until 2023.

While it may take Broadhead some time to adapt to life in the Championship, there is no reason why he cannot eventually go on to produce some eye-catching performances at this level under the guidance of Black Cats manager Alex Neil.
