Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has confirmed the club have made a fresh contract offer to striker Lyle Taylor.

The 29-year-old has now entered the final year of his contract at The Valley and the club are keen to extend the services of a player who netted 25 times for the Addicks last term.

Taylor also won the club's Player of the Year award as he played a key part in helping Charlton achieve a dramatic promotion via the League One play-offs.

Bowyer confirmed the club have made movements towards extending the prolific striker's two-year deal, while he also said the club is also lining up a contract offer for defender Anfernee Dijksteel.

“We’ve definitely made an offer for Lyle,” Bowyer told London News Online.

“And with Anfernee we are seeing his agent this week. We saw him at the back end of last week as well, but we’ll be going to them with an offer as well. Hopefully those two will sort themselves out sooner rather than later.”

This comes after Charlton lost key man Joe Aribo on a free transfer to Rangers last month after allowing the midfielder to run down his contract at The Valley.

The Verdict

This is positive news for Charlton fans, as the club cannot afford to lose any more of their best players on cheap deals.

The Aribo situation should have come as a wake-up call to the Addicks and they should be doing all they can to tie down Taylor on a longer term deal.

Taylor was a key player for Bowyer's side last season and I would fear the club would struggle to replace his goalscoring ability given the club's meagre budget.

A new deal for Taylor would mean that even if there was interest in the player, Charlton would at least be able to request a sizeable fee which would boost their financial situation.
