Update emerges on Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of PL striker

Sheffield Wednesday target Connor Wickham is reportedly not certain to leave Crystal Palace before the end of the January transfer window.

The window closes at 11 pm tonight and to this point, Wednesday have signed only two players so far–Manuel Hidalgo and Alessio Da Cruz.

The Owls still need to sign an out-and-out striker, with top-scorer Steven Fletcher sidelined with an injury.

The Yorkshire club have been linked with a move for Wickham, who is out-of-favour at Palace at the moment.

The 26-year-old has made nine appearances for the Eagles this term–scoring once and providing one assist.

Reputable journalist Alan Nixon has provided an update on the situation surrounding Wickham, revealing that he is not certain to leave the Premier League club at this point.

He claims that both Wednesday and Cardiff City are waiting on the English striker and that the move could be impacted by or the cause of “domino effects all over”.

Wednesday have been in dreadful form in recent weeks, winning just one of their last six league games–a run that has seen them slide down the Championship table.

The Verdict

This is a concerning update for Wednesday, who really need to add a new striker before the window closes.

It previously looked as though Wickham could be that man but Nixon’s update is somewhat worrying from the Owls perspective.

If they can’t land the Palace man, Garry Monk will be stuck with just Jordan Rhodes, Atdhe Nuhiu and Sam Winnall–who have scored just seven goals between them in the league this season–with Fletcher out injured.

Wickham has scored goals in the Championship in the past, including nine in 17 games for Wednesday, so would be a great addition.
