Update emerges on Matt Southall’s plans concerning Charlton Athletic

Former Charlton Athletic chairman Matt Southall is reportedly looking to sell his stake in the club for at least a high six-figure sum.

It is understood Southall purchased a 35% stake during East Street Investments’ takeover of the South London club – a £1 deal that was completed in January and included an agreement to buy the stadium and training ground for a further £50 million this summer.

Southall was installed as chairman last November when the takeover was initially agreed but has since been removed after an ugly boardroom dispute with majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer, which saw both sides trade allegations over the running of the club.

The EFL announced last month that they have launched an investigation into the takeover and the involvement of both Southall and Nimer.

The former Addicks chairman has indicated previously that he is ready to takeover if Nimer was ready to step away from the club.

It appears Southall is considering all his options, however, as it was reported today by Richard Cawley of the South London Press that he was looking for a high six-figure sum for his stake in the club.

However, Cawley also suggested that a deal for the club was unlikely in the current climate.

The Verdict

It has been very difficult to know what to believe in the boardroom saga between Nimer and Southall but Cawley is a trusted Charlton source, so you feel this is reliable.

It appears the ex-Addicks chairman is considering his options and values his 35% stake in the club at a high six-figure sum.

The last few months have difficult for Charlton fans, who will have real fears over the future of their club.
