Current free agent and ex-Sunderland player Luke O’Nien is said to have been subject to contract talks with Peterborough United, as per a recent report by the Peterborough Telegraph.
The 26-year-old utility man is now currently without a club after his contract with the Black Cats expired earlier in the week and it is said that he is still in talks over potentially staying at the Stadium of Light.
However it has been well documented that the former Wycombe Wanderers man has attracted interest from elsewhere in more recent times, with the likes of Hull City and Luton Town having been credited.
However it appears that the Posh are the only side to have made a real push to sign the player, with the report stating that the club held discussions with O’Nien before a deal became unlikely.
However despite the ongoing speculation, Sunderland are said to remain confident of convincing the 26-year-old to commit his future to the North East outfit, as their offer still remains on the table.
Quiz: What was the score the last time Sunderland played each of these 25 teams?
O’Nien played 44 games for the club across all competitions last term and was largely used at centre back by Lee Johnson as the Black Cats looked to deal with an injury crisis.
This will certainly come as a boost for Sunderland as it now appears that they are in the driving seat to keep O’Nien in their colours for the upcoming 2021/22 campaign.
He understandably has attracted plenty of interest from clubs higher up the pyramid but he may still be convinced to have another crack at promotion with Johnson moving forwards.
The player was so crucial for the club last season and I think it would be a major blow for them if he does turn them down, particularly as he is a favourite with the fans.
I’m sure the situation will become a lot clearer over the coming weeks as O’Nien prepares to finally determine where he will be playing his football.
