Chris Wilder is now out of the running to replace Jim Goodwin as Aberdeen manager.

According to the Press and Journal, the former Middlesbrough and Sheffield United coach will not be taking over the Scottish side.

Wilder has been without a role in football since being dismissed as manager of Boro earlier this season.

The 55-year old has turned down the opportunity to make his comeback with the Dons, as he seeks a different path back into the game.

It is understood that Wilder’s agent discussed the role with the Aberdeen board but was not convinced to take the reins of the first team squad.

Goodwin was dismissed after a series of poor performances that included a historic defeat in the Scottish Cup, falling to a 1-0 loss to sixth-tier Darvel.

Michael Carrick replaced Wilder at Boro, with the former midfielder having overseen a big turnaround in form.

Boro are currently 3rd in the Championship table as they battle for promotion to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Wilder previously led the Blades from League One to the Premier League with back to back promotions, before being dismissed with the team on its way back to the second tier in its second season back in the top flight.

The Verdict

Aberdeen have had a disappointing season, but this could have been a really intriguing appointment for Scottish football.

However, Wilder is likely now targeting a return to management at Championship level in England having also not been appointed at Portsmouth despite initial rumours linking him with the role.

It would be a surprise to see a Premier League side take a punt on him, but perhaps a move abroad could be on the cards if Wilder is afforded the chance.

Despite a poor exit from Middlesbrough, the experienced coach still has a really solid CV and could be a good appointment at most clubs.
