Sheffield Wednesday assistant manager Lee Bullen has revealed decisions are currently being made over contracts for some of the young players coming through at the Yorkshire club.

It has been a frustrating year for the Owls, who have been led by three different coaches and seen poor form in the new year seriously damage their chances of a top-six finish.

The end of the 2019/20 campaign looks as though it could be something of a crossroads moment for Wednesday, with eight senior players out of contract and a chance for Garry Monk to clear-out the deadwood from his squad.

He will likely be looking to freshen up his options and the Owls have a number of young players that they may be looking to involve more moving forward.

Players like Alex Hunt and Osaze Urhoghide have been on the fringes of the first-team squad and both been given chances to impress.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Bullen revealed that discussions were currently underway about contracts for some of their young prospects, the majority of whom have trained with Monk's senior side this season.

He said: “We pass the information on to Garry, who has delegated that onto myself and Thommo [Neil Thomspon] and Nicky Weaver, so we speak to Stevie Haslam and his coaches.

“Then if any decisions are made or any recommendations we pass it on to Garry who makes the decisions along with Stevie.”

With nine games left of the season, Wednesday are 15th in the Championship – eight points adrift of the top six.

The Verdict

This may be music to the ears of Wednesday fans as it appears work is underway to clear-out and freshen up Monk's squad.

Hunt and Urhoghide have both impressed in glimpses this season and by the sounds of it there are a number of players that have been training with the senior squad.

It's not been the easiest year for Owls supporters but it seems as though there is some hope moving forward.
