Update emerges on club’s pursuit of Sheffield United man as Arsenal and Aston Villa circle

Napoli have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via The Daily Star).

It is claimed that the Italian side have been put off by the Blades’ valuation of the Norwegian international, who still has three years remaining on his contract with the Championship side.

It has previously been reported that Berge could be available for a fee as little as £10.3million this summer, with Napoli being keen on signing him this summer.

However, it’s been claimed earlier this year by the Sheffield Star that Sheffield United were keen to keep hold of the 23-year-old, with the Blades believed to be holding out for a fee in the region of £35million.

Berge signed for Sheffield United back in 2020, and made 16 appearances in total for the Blades last term, although his efforts weren’t quite enough, as they were relegated from the Premier League after a disappointing league campaign.

They’re likely to be braced for bids for Berge’s services this summer, with both Arsenal and Aston Villa previously being credited with interest in landing his signature.

Sheffield United are set to take on Birmingham City in their opening match of the 2021/22 league campaign, in what could potentially be a tricky test for Slavisa Jokanovic’s first league game in charge of the Blades.

What was the score when Sheffield United last played these 25 teams?

The Verdict:

It’ll be interesting to see if the Blades can keep hold of Berge this summer.

He’s a player that has really impressed me since he signed for the club back in (), and I’m not surprised to hear that the likes of Arsenal and Aston Villa register their interest in striking a deal for his services.

But Sheffield United are clearly keen to keep their key players at Bramall Lane for the foreseeable future, and Berge is certainly one of them.

If they can do that, then you really wouldn’t put it past Slavisa Jokanovic’s side to win promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this term.
