Peterborough United's Marcus Maddison has rejected an initial contract offer from Charlton Athletic, according to the Peterborough Telegraph.

The 26-year-old has been on Lee Bowyer's radar all month.

He's been one of Posh' standout player this season, scoring ten and assisting eight in League One so far - he, along with Ivan Toney and Mo Eisa have been in prolific form for Darren Ferguson's team, scoring 42 between them.

Maddison's fine form has made him a target of Charlton who have this month seen new owners come in, with East Street Investment's finalising their takeover, and Matt Southall stepping in as the club's new chairman.

Bowyer will be looking to spend some of the Middle Eastern consortium's money this month, and Maddison could well be their second signing of the window - Aston Villa's Andre Green completed a loan-move to Charlton for the remainder of the season.

It looked as though Charlton were closing in on Maddison, but it's emerged today that they're initial contract offer has been rejected by the 26-year-old.

Charlton triggered the £2.5 million release clause and Maddison met with Bowyer on Monday. Despite negotiations stalling so far, it is understood that both parties are still in talks and are still looking to arrange a move this month.

The verdict

Maddison has lit up League One this year, and Charlton could be the perfect match for him. Bowyer's built a reputation at Charlton for bringing in players from lower leagues and bettering them, so expect Maddison and Charlton to agree on a deal soon.
