Huddersfield Town have been handed a potential boost in their pursuit of Birmingham City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

Indeed, it appears the Blues are keen to offload the shot-stopper this month.

That is according to Alan Nixon via Patreon, who reports that Birmingham City are keen to get their back up keeper off the wage bill, with the 32-year-old reportedly earning £23,000 per week.

The Blues would reportedly allow Etheridge to depart if a club covered just a quarter of that figure for the remainder of the campaign.

It should be said, though, that whilst that could be seen as a boost for Huddersfield, Nixon does also report that the Blues are cautious over a deal with the Terriers as they don't want to go ahead with a deal with a potential relegation rival just to free up cash.

Huddersfield are currently 22nd in the league standings, six points behind the Blues, who sit 19th after their recent poor run.

The Terriers were first linked with Etheridge recently following the blow that their first-choice keeper Lee Nicholls is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

It was recently confirmed that Nicholls will miss the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Verdict

Huddersfield Town have been dealt a huge blow in their attempt for survival, there is no doubt about it.

However, you have to say, on short notice and in January, Etheridge would be an experienced option to land.

With Birmingham's recent slide down the table thrusting them closer to the relegation zone, you can understand their hesitancy to potentially strengthen a rival.

However, the Blues should be looking up and not behind them and therefore, in my opinion, if they want to free up Etheridge's wages that badly, they shouldn't stop themselves from doing business with the Terriers.
